Block Island Sunscreen Review

Block Island Sunscreen Review

With summer fast approaching, my family is looking to pack in as much outdoor time as we possibly can.  I think the true key to happiness is spending time out in nature or with loved ones and combining those two things whenever possible.

It’s our goal to raise our kids with those same values, so even though we have a brand new baby, we are making it a point to get out of the house and making memories as much as humanly possible.  Read:  if I don’t get out of the house, these three kids WILL cause me to lose my mind…feel me?

When Block Island reached out to me to try out their Block Island Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, I jumped at the idea.

Even though my husband has a gorgeous tan complexion, my kids were absolutely not blessed with his skin.  They are as pale as can be…and they have me to thank for that.

As a result, I am ALWAYS on the hunt for a good sunscreen that 1. Is safe for sensitive skin 2. Is vegan 3. And for the love of chocolate can it please PLEASE just not be sticky???

Honestly, we’ve tried them all.  We bounce back and forth between brands because we’re never absolutely sold on one.  No matter how many brands claim to not be sticky, they all are.

Then there’s the convenience of a spray, but I have to weigh that against my love for the environment and frankly, we go through a freaking lot of sunscreen.

My point is, I really thought I’d be either writing back to Block Island to tell them I couldn’t in good conscience write a post about their product because it wasn’t a good fti for my family, or I’d be telling you guys it’s in my top 5 or something.

Low and behold, I’ve officially found a sunscreen my family can stick with.

First, I’ll tell you what I don’t love about it.

The kind we tried isn’t waterproof.

I can see why this is a HUGE drawback for some people, namely swimmers and surfers.

However, our family consists of my husband and I, plus our 3 year old, almost 2 year old, and our newborn.

We’re not going surfing anytime soon and the thought of taking them all swimming outdoors terrifies me.  Now that kids outnumber parents in our house, I’m sure I’ll forget one or something.  Just kidding, kind of.

Okay, what I LOVE about this product is that…wait for it…IT’S NOT STICKY!

No seriously, it has the best, almost powdery, finish when it dries and even when playing in the sand for hours, my boys didn’t have sand stuck all over their bodies.

We first tried this product a few weeks ago when I was 9 months pregnant and we took our last family trip to the beach.  We reapplied it a few times and I even used it on their faces.

Even on my 22 month old who has reactions to just about everything we put on his skin, there was no negative reaction whatsoever.  No itchiness, no rash, nothing.

Yesterday, we took our newborn to the zoo for the first time and slathered our toddlers up with Block Island again.  Again, no negative skin reactions to report, and even more importantly, no sunburn!

Another thing worth mentioning is how far a little bit of this sunscreen goes.

The first time I used it on my 22 month old, I started to slather it on his arm and had to keep smoothing it along his shoulder and most of the way down his chest and back to use it all.  That’s a huge plus when you’re using it on your whole family all the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about quality over quantity when it comes to my family’s health and safety, but if I can make a little bit of quality sunscreen go a long way, we’re also satisfying my frugal side and that makes me an even happier mama.

We travel A LOT and spend a ton of time outside.  It’s part of my philosophy about raising happy children.  For me to commit to a particular kind of sunscreen is pretty huge in our house.  Especially considering we go through gallons of the stuff.

I honestly think unless we end up spending oodles of time in the water for some reason, I won’t even try another brand of sunscreen in the foreseeable future.

Next on my list to try is their night cream!

Have you ever tried Block Island Sunscreen?  Did you love it as much as I did?  What kind of sunscreen can’t your family live without?  Let me know in the comments!
